This was the club's first ever Champions League campaign following their Division 1 title triumph in '96 and such was the excitement that they seemingly forgot to put the club badge onto their shirts. Cool was understudy to Lionel Charbonnier at this time and was an unused substitute, both keepers wore Uhlsport shirts thought while their outfield team-mates played in an Adidas kit. AJA had lost 1-0 to the holders Ajax in their opening game but bounced back in style here to win 2-1 in Glasgow thanks to a double-salvo from Thomas Deniaud. By the time the team's met again Auxerre were playing in shirts with a club crest. The side did manage to progress from the group stage ahead of Rangers and Grasshoppers but were knocked out by eventual winners Borussia Dortmund in the Quarter Finals. Cool went on to become the club's #1 for 8 years between 1998-06 and barring a loan spell in 93-94 he spent his entire career with Auxerre
